How to re-light pilot light on gas hot water system

Is the hot water in your tap coming out cold?

You may need to check your hot water system to see if there are any warning lights.

Can you see a little flame on your hot water system? The pilot light is a little flame that stays lit in preparation for using the main burner.

If you can smell gas, you will need to contact your Property Manager as a Licensed Plumber is required to check the system for leaks and other issues.

To re-light the pilot light

  1. Find the access panel on your hot water system.
  2. Turn off the gas to your hot water system by turning the gas knob in the clockwise direction.
  3. Wait a little while to ensure that any redundant gas has gone from the system.
  4. Turn the knob to the position marked “pilot”.
  5. Push down the knob (you may need to hold for 30-40 seconds) and with the knob still pushed in, press the “pilot” button.
  6. The pilot light should now be on. If you cannot see a small flame, you may need to contact your Property Manager as there may be an issue with the pilot light.
