How to switch gas cylinders

If there is gas at the rental property, there are generally two cylinders.

The two cylinders are connected by tubing to a valve known as a “changeover valve” which determines which gas bottle is in use. The changeover valve can be automatic or manual.

This video created by Elgas may be helpful in learning how to check and switch gas cylinders.

Automatic

If the changeover valve is automatic then it automatically switches over to the other gas cylinder when it is empty. The indicator will turn red to show that the cylinder is empty – this is usually a good time to order a replacement cylinder from your gas provider.

Manual

If the changeover valve is manual, then you will need to switch the gas cylinder manually.

To manually changeover:

  1. Turn off all gas home appliances.
  2. Go to the area of your property where the gas cylinders are located.
  3. Turn the hand wheel on the empty gas bottle to Off.
  4. You will need to move the changeover lever to point towards the other gas bottle which should be the full bottle.
  5. Turn the hand wheel on the full gas bottle to On/Open.
  6. You may also need to re-light the pilot light on your hot water system, click here for details.
  7. Contact your gas provider to order a replacement to ensure you are ready for the next time the gas cylinder runs out.

It is a good idea to check the gas cylinders more often during the Winter months as usage is generally increased.
